UVA and UVB
Did you know that there are two types of UV light that contribute to the risk for developing skin cancer? Ultraviolet A (UVA) has a longer wavelength, and is associated with skin aging. Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a shorter wavelength and is associated with skin burning. SkinMD SPF products deliver an extraordinary level of performance of protection from UVA (aging) & UVB (burning), and defense from blue light and infrared radiation.
Broad Spectrum Protection
The SPF number on sunscreens only addresses the level of UVB protection (the rays that cause sunburn) and not UVA protection (the rays that cause tanning and premature aging). Look for products that have both a SPF value above 30 and state “Broad-Spectrum”. If a sunscreen says “broad spectrum” on the label, this means it protects against both UVB and UVA rays. SkinMD SPF products deliver broad-spectrum protection.
Active Ingredients
Sunscreen includes active ingredients that help prevent the sun’s UV radiation from reaching your skin. Here’s how the two types of sunscreen work. Physical sunscreen ingredients including titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, block and scatter the rays before they penetrate your skin. Chemical sunscreen ingredients, like avobenzone and octisalate, absorb UV rays before they can damage your skin.
